Yup, you read the title right. I have offically become... a Linux user. Dun. Dun. Duuuuuuuuuuuuun!
No, but seriously, after talking with someone about linux for a hot minute, I realized it would be cool to put an instance of Debian on my old-ass Thinkpad so I can dualboot Windows and Linux. I wanted to put it on my SSD, but I can't squeeze any more space out of it than I already have, so I made room on my HDD instead. Debian with KDE Plasma is surprisingly zippy on a HDD, so that's neat. Once I get my desktop back (it's at home right now) and fully turn this laptop into a linux machine, I bet it will be even zippier. The only real slowdowns it has is when booting and logging in, which is understandable since it's on a HDD.
But yeah, this is sick!
Some more thoughts before I let you go:
- KDE fucking rocks. I haven't experienced one (1) instance of lag within the interface after boot. (EDIT: I just experience a bit of lag now, but I'm installing a really huge virtual machine package and downloading a Windows 10 ISO at the exact same time, so yee) Plus, I can make windows wobble when I move them. I love it so much. One caveat though: it defaulted to single clicking to open instead of double-clicking, which was really annoying until I figured out how to change it. Good news: you can change it. In fact, you can change a lot of stuff about KDE. I haven't gone too deep into it yet, but I was surprised as to how much customizability there was.
- You will notice I'm using Microsoft Edge. I know. Fuck you, I do what I want. Also note that you can't get this through normal website: you have to go and download the "Insider" edition, which doesn't support Microsoft account sync and possibly other crap. Oh well. It's Edge, and Edge makes me happy. Also note: Konqueror sucks dick. It's basically Internet Explorer 8 but free-as-in-free, complete with a built-in file manager in case you wanna browse your porn stashe in the same application as you browse e621 to find more specimens for said stash.
- A lot of applications seem to have their own UI frameworks, which makes things kinda weird. I've seen like 3-5 different file browsers within apps so far, which is more than I can ever say for Windows. On one hand, it's cool. On the other hand... why?
- Finally, when I installed Debian, it also added its own bootloader which lets me go back to Windows... but defaults to Debian. In the, idk, 48ish hours since I've installed Debian, I haven't really felt a good reason to boot up Windows. The only two reasons would be to play Steam, but even that is way less pulling of a reason than I ever thought it would be, and to use Microsoft Office (especially Outlook!!!), but I am currently working on that!!!! Once I get Outlook on here, I won't need Windows for shit! That will be awesome.
Alright. See ya later! Have a great day.
